Aurora borealis is a type of topaz or rhinestone that shines with irridescence. The technique involves depositing a very thin layer of metallic atoms on the lower surface of the stone. This process was invented in 1955 by the Swarovski company together with Christian Dior.

Oh boo hoo, none of my comments are here.
Well...I think I said that I was surprised Swarovski invented aurora b. crystals because I couldn't find any of it at their counters or in their shop. However, their regular crystals are rainbow-y enough as it is!
These are SO beautiful.
Oh, and the crystals I bought to make my jewellery are just like the ones in the middle necklace.
The blue one? Isn't it lovely? I tried to bid on something like that on ebay once but the price got way too high for me.
